When Depression Doesn’t Announce Itself

Depression doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it’s the motivation that stopped showing up. The things you used to enjoy that now feel flat. The sense that you’re going through the motions while everyone around you seems fine. At SACH Psychotherapy, we work with people navigating depression in all its forms, in person in Barrie and online across Ontario, including Brampton.

Depression Doesn't Always Look Like Sadness

The textbook picture of depression, crying, unable to get out of bed, doesn’t describe most people’s experience. Depression often looks like irritability, or exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix. It looks like pulling back from the people you care about, or keeping up appearances while feeling empty underneath.

Some people with depression are highly functional. They go to work, meet their deadlines, show up for others, and feel nothing about any of it. That’s still depression, and it still deserves attention.

Common signs include:

  • Persistent low mood or emotional flatness
  • Loss of interest in things that used to matter
  • Fatigue, low energy, or changes in sleep
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Withdrawal from relationships and social connection
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Physical symptoms, headaches, digestive issues, tension

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not broken. You’re dealing with something real, and there is support available.

How We Work With Depression at SACH Psychotherapy

How we work

How We Work With Depression at SACH Psychotherapy

At SACH Psychotherapy, depression counselling is not a fixed protocol. We draw on evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Narrative Therapy, and we adapt based on what you actually need.

CBT helps identify and shift the thought patterns that keep depression in place. ACT focuses on building a meaningful life even when difficult emotions are present. Narrative Therapy helps you separate your identity from depression, it’s something you’re experiencing, not something you are.

Sessions are collaborative. You set the pace and the direction. The work evolves as you do.

Support

A Different Kind of Support

A lot of people who come to SACH Psychotherapy for depression have already tried to push through on their own. They’ve told themselves it’ll pass. They’ve stayed busy. They’ve minimized it because other people seem to have it harder.

At SACH Psychotherapy, you don’t need to justify how you feel or convince anyone that it’s serious. We start from where you are. Sessions are honest and focused, not on getting you to feel a certain way, but on helping you understand what’s happening and find a way forward that actually fits your life.

Questions People Ask Before Starting

What type of counsellor do I need for depression?

For depression, a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is well-suited to provide talk therapy, including approaches like CBT, ACT, and Narrative Therapy. At SACH Psychotherapy, our therapist is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and experienced in working with depression across a range of presentations.

Clinical depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is typically characterized by: (1) persistent low or empty mood, (2) loss of interest or pleasure in activities, (3) significant fatigue or low energy, (4) difficulty concentrating or making decisions, and (5) feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt. These symptoms are present most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks.

High-functioning depression (sometimes called Persistent Depressive Disorder or dysthymia) describes a state where someone continues to manage daily responsibilities, work, relationships, obligations, while living with a persistent low mood that doesn’t fully lift. It often goes unrecognized because the person appears to be coping. The impact on quality of life is real, even when it’s less visible.

The two core symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder are: (1) depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, and (2) markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities. At least one of these must be present for a diagnosis, alongside other symptoms lasting at least two weeks.

Approximately 30% of people with major depression experience Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), meaning they don’t respond adequately to standard antidepressant medications. However, therapy, including CBT and other evidence-based approaches, can be effective even when medication alone has not provided relief. Many people with TRD benefit from a combined or therapy-focused approach.
